According to foreign media reports, scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States have developed a new technology that can remove and store carbon dioxide in the air, which can also be used to reduce ocean acidification.
It is reported that this technology can use the acid produced by electrolysis of seawater to accelerate the decomposition of silicate minerals while producing hydrogen fuel and other gases. After testing, the concentration of hydroxide in the electrolyte solution at the end of the experiment has increased. The electrolyte solution proved to have strong absorption and retention of carbon dioxide.
In addition, the researchers also stated that the carbonates and bicarbonates produced by this process can be used to reduce ocean acidification, and the principle is the same as that of Alka Seltzer (gastric digestion tablets) in the stomach.
Scientist Greg Rao was the lead author of the study. He said: "We not only discovered the way to remove and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but also discovered ways to generate valuable hydrogen. We also think we can use this new technology to help save the marine ecosystem." It has been published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
When carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, a significant part of it is absorbed by the oceans and forms carbonic acid, which increases the acidity of seawater. Ocean acidification is extremely detrimental to many types of marine life, especially corals and starfish. Scientists expect that by the middle of the 21st century, global temperatures will increase by at least 2 degrees Celsius, and the acidity of seawater will increase by more than 60% compared with pre-industrial levels.
