In a study by Professor Iftach Yacoby, the director of the Renewable Energy Laboratory at the University of Tel Aviv University of Science, Israel, researchers have produced hydrogen from plants.
The researchers implanted an enzyme in the seaweed sample and observed the production of hydrogen, which can provide green fuel for cars.
"We don't know if this is commercially viable, but we believe it has potential," Yacoby said in a laboratory visit.
The study was a collaborative project with Kevin Redding of the University of Arizona. The results of the study were published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science in April.
"From the moment we discovered how to use plants to produce energy, all options are open," Yacoby said.
He said that this new study shows that plants have the potential to generate electricity, but at the same time reminded that the world may need up to 20 years to benefit from this research.
"Thanks to the results of our research, many things can be considered now. The future will tell us what the results will be."
"The results of the study show that the plants that have received the genes start to work like advanced photovoltaic cells. We realize that we have found the key'interface'!", he added excitedly.
