Matsushita Electric Co., Ltd. of Japan said recently that the company's technical staff and the research team of Kyoto University have developed a new lithium battery material that does not require rare metal cobalt, and trial-produced a new type of lithium battery. This lithium battery is expected to get rid of the dependence on cobalt and greatly reduce production costs.
The research team headed by Matsushita Electric's technical staff and professor Yoshida Ryoichi of Kyoto University used lithium and carbon to develop a new organic material that took advantage of the composition of the materials and solved the problem of the easy dissolution of organic electrodes into electrolysis during ion mobility. In the liquid problem, it successfully produced a new type of lithium battery without using cobalt as an electrode material. The results show that the battery produced by the new material has the same capacity as the lithium battery containing the cobalt material as the electrode.
The experimental results also show that the lithium battery produced by this new type of material is charged and discharged 100 times, and the attenuation of its capacity does not exceed 20%. The researchers said that they will continue to improve the new materials, at least to increase the battery life to between 500 and 1000 charge and discharge, and then commercial production.
