For many years, circuit board drill manufacturers have been reducing the consumption of cemented carbide materials by producing stainless steel and solid carbide composite drills. For example, the drill bit produced by Japan's Union Tool Company (Tokyo) consists of a slotted solid carbide shank inserted into a stainless steel shank. The company uses a proprietary process technology that does not require glue to secure the toolholder. In addition, at least one other board drill manufacturer has glued the carbide tip to the stainless steel shank. 
Union Tool's basic model of printed circuit board drills has a total length of 38.1 mm and drill diameters ranging from 0.05 mm up to approximately 6.35 mm. When drilling a circuit board, the cutting speed reaches 500sfm, and for this micro drill, the speed is as high as 300,000r/min. Jonafhan Hay, vice president of sales and marketing development at Union Tool USA, said: "We have been using this combination technology to produce all board drills with a diameter of 1.6mm or less. One of the reasons for using stainless steel shanks is This allows us to purchase high-grade grades of carbide for the manufacture of the cutter head. In addition, the drill usually has to be changed every 10 minutes during machining, and the fit of the stainless steel shank to the tool steel collet Better than the overall carbide handle."
Union Tool has a 38% market share of global circuit board drills and produces approximately 20 million drill bits per month.
