Fujitsu develops light source data that can be read by smart phones

LED billboards may soon transmit invisible data that your smart phone can recognize. Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a technology that can implant ID data into LED light sources. Therefore, pointing a smart phone at a glowing object allows the phone to read the corresponding information from the cloud server. This technology can be used to obtain product data in advertisements, and users can even make purchases directly through the mobile payment system. According to Fujitsu, this technology can be used in retail, museums, galleries or trade shows.

Fujitsu uses color modulation technology to change the composition of red, green, and blue (RGB) in LED light sources. By continuously modifying the color intensity of each color channel, ID data is encoded and embedded in the light source without changing the visibility characteristics of the light source itself.

At a press conference in Tokyo this week, Fujitsu employees demonstrated the technology. The presenter aimed the camera of the smartphone at a plastic fashion model silhouetted by an LED light source and a traditional Japanese woodcut print. The phone processed the image data and acquired the ID, and immediately displayed on the screen the plastic model. Product information and historical information on woodcut prints.

"Now, the concept of the Internet of Things has become increasingly important, but I don't think anything can be connected to the Internet," said Akira Nakagawa, director of image systems at Fujitsu Laboratories. "But this system allows objects to be connected in a virtual way. This is the purpose of our development of this technology."

This method does not require the use of a camera to take an actual image of an object, but can be used with any type of light source as long as the light source satisfies the requirements for separately modifiable RGB channels, and the light source emitted from the projector is also included therein. With color modulators, this technology can work with any LED device. These devices are already quite popular and they are inexpensive, Nakagawa said.

This technology for implanting IDs resembles QR codes, NFC tags, and visible light communication (VLC) in some aspects. VLC is also a data communication method that can be triggered by LED light sources. Although the data rate transmitted through the LED is only a relatively low 10 bps, by this means, there is no need to add a tag on the object for display, and the tag may interfere with the display or the appearance of the object. Nakagawa added that another attractive feature of the technology is that LEDs are now everywhere.

No matter what the light source, as long as the reflection into the camera lens can trigger the information download, so the system is very versatile, including the museum holdings display to the building, and even people themselves can initiate data transmission.

For example, the performer can walk onto the stage and raise the LED light source. The audience uses the smartphone to point the performer and download the song he is singing. Another example is the placement of ID codes in light sources in museum collections to trigger texts displayed in the visitor's native language.

Fujitsu is testing the technology in different application areas to improve its accuracy. They hope to formally commercialize it in fiscal year 2015 (March 31, 2016). Last year, the company commercialized a similar technology that allows users to point the smartphone at the TV and display the corresponding product information on the phone screen. This technology is widely adopted by mainstream TV shopping companies in Japan.

The LED system will be on display at the Fujitsu Forum 2014 in Munich, Germany this Wednesday and Thursday.
