A series of progresses have been made in the research of photocatalysis of polar materials in Xinjiang physics and chemistry

Polar materials Due to the anisotropy of molecules in the crystal, the positive and negative centers of some groups in the unit cell are not coincident, and there exist intrinsic dipole moments, resulting in a spontaneous polarization electric field. At present, these materials are mainly used in nonlinear optics, ferroelectrics, functional ceramics and thin films.

Researchers at the Environmental Science and Technology Research Laboratory of the Xinjiang Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences have made series of advances in the preparation and application of polar photocatalytic materials with built-in boron-oxygen structural elements. The researchers analyzed the ability of this class of materials to remove chlorophenol-based contaminants, and confirmed the presence of a built-in electric field in conjunction with Kelvin probe force microscopy (Chemistry of Materials, 2014, 26, 3169); using density functional theory ( The DFT) method confirms the electronic structure of polar materials and the photogenerated charge transfer process (Journal of Materials Chemistry A, 2015, 3, 12179); investigated the degradation performance of organic pollutants by different polarization fields caused by different metal ion radii. (Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, 2016, 181, 436).

Recently, researchers in the laboratory have designed and prepared polar photocatalytic materials in which BO structural elements are complexed with metal ions having a d0 electron configuration. It has been found that such materials have excellent performance in removing halogenated hydrocarbons. 10 minutes still has up to 83% removal of hard-to-degrade fluorine-substituted phenols. The experimental results are attributed to the synergistic effect of the metal polyhedron formed with the d0 electronic structure metal ions and the BO structure polyhedron to increase the macroscopic polarization electric field of the material and improve the carrier separation ability. However, the greater the polarity of the material, the higher its activity, and it is worth investigating further research. To this end, researchers have synthesized four isopolar polar materials with different polarization capabilities. Researchers conducted a detailed investigation of the material through X-ray powder diffraction, UV-visible diffuse reflection, single crystal structure analysis, photoelectrochemistry, ion chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, atomic force microscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy, and theoretical calculations. Single crystal structure, photoresponse range, charge transfer process, adsorption energy, degradation process, and chemical composition during degradation and their degradation mechanism. Interestingly, it was found that although the photocatalytic activity has a certain relationship with its polarization ability, it is not entirely certain. Some of the materials increase with the increase of polarization ability, and when the polarization ability increases to a certain degree, its activity is also closely related to the surface potential change and adsorption energy of the material.
