Although there are many attractive studies currently underway, we are still a long way from the production of stretchable electronic displays. The good news is that a research team at the National University of Singapore has developed a new type of stretchable material that can emit light and achieve self-healing. It is HELIOS. It is made of a "unique mixture" of fluoroelastomer + surfactant, and the texture is much like a transparent elastic rubber sheet.

Fluoroelastomers are synthetic rubbers based on fluorocarbons. Surfactants reduce the surface tension between two liquids (usually used as a cleaning agent).
Because the material has a high dielectric constant, it can store more charge at a lower voltage than other stretchable display technologies.
As a result, it is reported that it can emit light at 20 times the brightness, but the voltage is only 1/4, and it can even be powered wirelessly.
It is worth mentioning that, because the chemical bonds between the molecules are reversible, they can repair themselves after being cut or punctured. And it can be done under normal environmental conditions, and can heal without auxiliary measures such as heating.
If this technology is further developed, it is expected to be applied to products such as wireless displays in the future, and even be installed on the skin of software robots that can work in dark environments (such as disaster relief sites).
The research chief scientist said that as humans become more dependent on machines and robots, the use of durable and energy-saving light-emitting devices created by HELIOS will have great value.
Manufacturers and consumers can save long-term costs and reduce the generation of electronic waste and energy consumption, which in turn makes advanced display technology affordable and environmentally friendly.
Details of this study have been published in the recently published "Nature Materials" (Nature Materials) journal.
