New process transforms small pieces of non-recyclable glass into marketable products

According to foreign media New Atlas, although glass is recyclable, the recycling process is usually limited to large pieces of glass that can be easily sorted by color. Because recycling of smaller glass is often considered not worthwhile, these are usually discarded. However, a new process can transform them into useful products.

This proprietary technology was jointly developed by PhD candidates Rhys Pirie and Professor Damien Batstone at the University of Queensland, Australia. This technology combines what is known as "a drainage cleaner known to most people" to dissolve various pieces of glass into liquid silicates.

The liquid can then be used in various products such as tires, cleaners, toothpaste, concrete seal curing agents and even crop fertilizers. It can also be used to manufacture silica gel desiccants that can be placed in products such as electronic devices. However, it cannot be made into new glass on a commercial scale.

Since the glass is composed of approximately 70% to 75% silica-which allows it to be converted into liquid silicate-the process is almost not wasted. Pirie said that it takes about 1.3 kg (2.9 lbs) of waste glass to make 1 kg of silica gel.

Unlike traditional methods for producing liquid silicates, this technology also requires relatively little energy. Part of the reason is that the researchers estimate that their process is more than 50% cheaper than existing production systems.

"Currently, these silicates are produced through the glass production route. In this process, you can efficiently manufacture glass and then convert it into a silicate product of soluble gel-type products," Batstone said. "We will not do this, but take the glass that has been manufactured and is actually discarded and turn it into this commercial silicate product through a simpler process."
