Marine paint development to high performance and low pollution development

At the 14th Asian Coatings Industry Conference held on October 18-20, Zhao Jun, Dean of the Institute of Marine Chemical Industry, said that in recent years, China has invested a lot of manpower and material resources in the research and development of marine coatings, and has achieved gratifying results. The level of research and development has been quite similar to that of foreign countries. The variety has also expanded from the traditional type to the medium-to-high grade. Epoxy coatings have been rapidly developed and widely used. Marine coating technology is undergoing fundamental changes.

With the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, it will take effect in China, as well as the IMO Performance Standards for Protective Coatings for Ships' Ballast Tanks and the European Union's Guide to Fungicide Products. With the implementation of the REACH Regulation, fundamental changes have taken place in marine coating technology. In the 1990s, non-toxic, low-toxicity, high-solids, solvent-free and long-lasting new types of marine paints continued to emerge. Marine coatings based on epoxy coatings accounted for more than 60% of all new shipbuilding coatings. Gradually replaced the traditional alkyd paint and chlorinated rubber paint.

At present, marine coatings are developing in the direction of high performance, energy conservation and resources, convenient construction, and environmental protection and safety. Zhao Jun said that these factors contain each other and influence each other, which increases the difficulty of research and development. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, marine coatings will not only prevent corrosion but also develop towards functionalization. The research direction of anti-rust coatings is mainly water-based anti-corrosion anti-rust pigments and base materials; anti-fouling coatings are developed towards Wuxi, low-copper, heavy-metal-free, and non-sterilizers. Research mainly focuses on matrix resins, new anti-foulants and Antifouling performance evaluation; Inner cabin coatings, environmentally friendly coatings are the focus of research, such as solvent-free epoxy coatings for drinking water tanks, high-solid epoxy coatings for oil tanks, etc.; research on new ballast tank coatings is mainly focused on high solids and thick films. Coatings; fluorocarbon resin and fluorinated polyurethane and other modified materials as the hull coating surface coating material above the waterline is the best choice; deck coating development is mainly high-performance, flexible, non-slip, light weight , wear resistance, impact resistance and so on.
