Lama Fire Department protects Puning Temple for 28 years

In the Puning Temple, the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in the north of China, a fire brigade consisting of 42 lamas guards the world’s cultural heritage day and night. For 28 years, Puning Temple has never had a fire danger.

Built in 1775, Puning Temple has a history of more than 200 years. In 1986, under the strong support of the Chengde City Fire Fighting Detachment, Puning Temple established the first fire brigade in China and implemented a 24-hour on-duty system to investigate fire hazards on a daily basis.

“The buildings in the Puning Temple are all wooden structures. The biggest fire hazard is the incense of the visitors and the sea lights in the temple.” Zhang Zhong, deputy director of the Puning Temple Management Office, told the reporter that the focus of work is not on fire but on “defense.” The warp curtains hanging in the hall need to be soaked with flame retardants. The buckets are always filled with clean water and can be rescued in the event of a small fire.

Bai Huquan, head of the Lama Fire Brigade, said: “Every year, we will hold a fire drill to improve our fire emergency capabilities.
