Unsatisfied with the recent reports that the cloned animal meat was a safe product, Japan decided to conduct its own experiment.
According to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture officials, the safety committee was asked to discuss the matter.
It is unclear how long it will take for the Japanese food safety supervisory agency, the food safety committee, to reach a conclusion. An official of the committee said that they currently have no precedent for comparison. The cloned animals of this study involved cloned and cloned pigs.
According to Reuters, many Japanese consumers are known for their sensitivity to food safety, and they may oppose the import of meat or milk from cloned animals into human food supplies.
According to officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Japan has been breeding cloned cattle since 1998.
As of last September, a total of 535 cloned cattle for research purposes were bred in Japan.
Previously, the United States had made a final risk assessment of cloned animal products before Japan.
