Japan IHI announced on April 28, 2015 that it has supplied the Airbus passenger aircraft "A320neo" with a mass production No. 1 machine for the composite fan casing of the "PW1100G-JM" engine (Figure) . This fan case is manufactured and supplied by the Tomioka Plant of IHI Aerospace Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as IA) (Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture, Japan).
PW1100G-JM is an engine that was developed from the joint venture "International Aero Engines (IAE)" since 2011. IAE's sponsors are U.S. Pratt & Whitney (P&W), Japan Aircraft Engine Association (JAEC), and German MTU Aero Engines (MTU). IHI participates in the IAE project at a rate of approximately 15% and is responsible for the development, design, manufacture and maintenance of fan casings and low-pressure compressors.
Among them, the fan case uses composite materials technology developed by IHI to help reduce the weight of the engine and improve fuel efficiency. In 2014, IHI set up a new fan-fabrication plant in IA to use a single production line to complete a series of processes from lamination, cutting, molding, bonding, and painting of composite materials, thereby significantly reducing the lead time. IHI aimed at the mass production plan of the PW1100G-JM that started quickly and established a system that can meet the corresponding requirements.
The A320neo equipped with the PW1100G-JM engine is the latest passenger aircraft with the largest capacity of 120 to 200 seats. It is scheduled to enter commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2015. It has been alleged that the number of confirmed orders has reached about 4,000.
